Yesterday I texted my friend Eliza and asked her to go on a run.  She offered me a 7:15am run time the next day (way too early) or offered a burger date.  I went with the latter and she suggested we check out Bareburger since we both live relatively close.

Eliza is wheat intolerant and when we arrived we were happy to see that Bareburger has a gluten free tapioca bread bun; I'm normally forced to order my burgers wrapped in lettuce so it was nice to have a different option.  Bareburger serves up organic burgers but not only cow burgers; they also serve bison, turkey, ostrich, and veggie patties.  I opted for the veggie patty after being assured it is gluten free while Eliza opted for the bison patty.  We both went for the tapioca bun (a 35-cent surcharge) and decided to share a basket of fries.

I'm really kicking myself for not bringing my phone to the meal because I couldn't take pictures of the amazing burgers when they came out.  These burgers were difficult to eat they were so tall!  Better yet, they were delicious.  When they first arrived we were both dubious that they had been served on tapioca buns because the bread looked and felt so real.  That's right, I picked at the bun before biting into it.  I'm so used to poor bread imitations when I order gluten free bread at a restaurant that I was shocked by the quality of the buns at Bareburger.  Lest I forget, the veggie patty was also delicious.

I'll definitely be visiting Bareburger again, not only because of the restaurant's amazing gluten free bun but also because of its delicious veggie patty and its commitment to organic meat.  As I mentioned I ordered the veggie patty but the restaurant's commitment to organic meats, and in some cases grass-fed, hormone- and antibiotic-free meat, makes me feel good about patronizing this burger shop over other competitors.

NuGo Slim Bars

This review is way overdue and I apologize for being so behind on posting; I swear I will get back to posting more often soon!

Anyway, a representative from NuGo recently sent me a great care package with lots of samples of NuGo Slim bars in all three flavors: Brownie Crunch, Roasted Peanut, and Raspberry Truffle.  My faithful readers know that I usually stick to ThinkThin and Larabar as my go-to gluten free bar options as they are both readily available and gluten free.

However, after sampling NuGo Slim bars, I may have to vary it up a bit.  NuGo Slim bars pack a lot of great things into a small package, not least of which is flavor.  In addition to the delicious flavors, my favorite of them being the Raspberry Truffle, the bars pack 15 grams of protein, 9 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of sugar.  Only 2 grams of sugar!  Many protein bars are often full of sugar and are meant more for bodybuilders than a runner like me, but with only 2 grams of sugar in NuGo Slims I feel comfortable adding them to a post-workout routine.  NuGo Slim bars also excise maltitol and artificial sweetener for real dark chocolate in a bar that is really an enjoyable snack.

Creo' Restaurant

After the ceremony for admission to the bar my parents and I checked out Creo' Restaurant in Stuyvesant Plaza.  We were originally debating between Creo' and a chain restaurant and opted to go to Creo' to try out something unique in Albany while we were there.

The restaurant is very gluten free friendly, with a menu that marks which items can and cannot be prepared gluten free (although such marking does not exist on the restaurant's website).  After surveying my options, I decided to go with the butternut squash and cauliflower pizza with a side of brussel sprouts.  The pizza came stacked with ricotta, fresh mozzarella, arugula and walnuts and was definitely a sight to behold.

The pizza's crust is not made at Creo' and therefore tastes similar to many other gluten free pizza crusts I've had in the past: on the thinner side and not particularly flavorful but a good base on which to build with excellent flavors.  Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the flavors of the Butternut Squash pizza, but I attribute that to my own preferences than any fault of Creo'.  In fact, the brussel sprouts were fantastic - a testament to the culinary skills of the chefs at Creo'.

If I were in Albany again I would definitely check out Creo' and go with a different pizza option.
