Our waiter was super helpful in my selection from the DineLA menu. I opted for the Roasted Squash and Ancho Chili Soup as my appetizer, the Pan Seared Golden Trout as my entrée, and the Flourless Chocolate Cake as my dessert. I also cajoled Lauren into ordering the wine pairings with me. Having just come from a wonderful weekend of eating my way through Denver, I decided that I shouldn't let the good eating and drinking end just because I came home to Los Angeles!
I absolutely loved the soup appetizer along with the wine that came along with it, Bott-Geyl Gewurztraminer "Les Elements," Alsace 2004. While Lauren and I both admit to being far from winos (our palates allow us to detect whether something is wine or beer... and that's about as sophisticated as we get), we enjoyed the pairing. The soup was perfectly spiced and a great fall soup. Lauren was surprised to find out that this was only the second time in my entire life that I've ordered soup in a restaurant... the first time being just a few days prior in Denver! Crazy, I know.
I didn't receive my entrée quite as well as my appetizer. The trout was served whole, something I was certainly not expecting. While it was good, the work of cutting off the head and de-spining it was frustrating. I've had some practice in working with whole fish from my time living in Spain, but I would have liked to be warned of the way the fish was served so I knew what I was getting myself into. It wasn't particularly appealing to be spitting out bones for much of the main portion of my meal.
The flourless chocolate cake was also good; it wasn't too dense and wasn't too light. It wasn't perfect, but as a gluten free option it was pretty great.
Of course be warned: BLD is in no way a gluten free environment. However the waiter assured me that they would use separate and clean utensils in preparing my meal. My waiter was knowledgeable and double checked on every option I chose to reassure me.
Do you love it or do you love it?
