I was particularly excited about trying the restaurant's new gluten free double layer chocolate cake. I have never tried any of RFD's gluten free products but have tried their gluten free entrée options and have been satisfied with all of the ones I've had. The restaurant's pizza is one of my favorite gluten free pizzas; the crust is plenty flavorful and bursts with herbs and other delights.
Unfortunately my visit to the restaurant's West Hollywood location did not culminate in me meeting the double layer chocolate cake as the restaurant was all out. Rochelle and I split a chocolate cupcake with strawberry frosting; a totally enjoyable experience. The cupcake was rich in its chocolate flavor, but the strawberry frosting didn't quite do it for me.
Even better than checking out the new location was that they had the chocolate cake available!
Allison and I both ordered the pizza; I encouraged her to try something different but she couldn't resist after hearing me blather on and on about how excited I was about ordering it. I was happy to have a partner-in-crime to finish this slice with, as it was enormous!
I let her have the first bite and she said something that is always music to my ears: "It tastes like real chocolate cake!" It's difficult enough to make a decent chocolate cake with gluten, and to make one without gluten or any animal products that can appeal to vegans, non-vegans, gluten free and non-gluten free folk alike was pretty astounding. Needless to say, we devoured the cake.
